Learning how to move off and stop safely is one of the first practical skills you’ll develop behind the wheel. Although it might sound straightforward, doing it correctly is essential for keeping yourself and other road users safe.
At A Pass 4 U Driving School, we teach every learner simple routines that build confidence and help create safe driving habits from day one. Two of the most important routines you’ll learn are POM and MSPSL. These techniques are not only crucial for passing your driving test but are skills you’ll use every time you drive.
What is POM?
POM stands for:
- Prepare
- Observe
- Move
This routine helps ensure you move away safely and under complete control.
1. Prepare
Before moving the car, you’ll prepare it correctly.
For manual cars this includes:
- Press the clutch fully down.
- Select first gear.
- Set the gas (if required).
- Find the biting point.
- Release the handbrake while keeping the car secure.
If you’re learning in an automatic, preparation is simpler:
- Hold the brake pedal.
- Select Drive (D).
- Release the handbrake or electronic parking brake.
- Keep your foot on the brake until you’re ready to move.
Your instructor will explain why smooth preparation prevents stalling and gives you better control.
2. Observe
Observation is the most important part of moving off.
Before the car moves, check:
- Interior mirror
- Right door mirror
- Right blind spot
- Front of the vehicle
- Left blind spot if necessary
Remember, observations are there to answer one question:
“Is it safe to move?”
If another vehicle, cyclist or pedestrian is approaching, you simply wait until it’s safe.
3. Move
Once you’ve prepared the car and completed your observations:
- Release the clutch smoothly (manual).
- Apply gentle acceleration.
- Steer accurately.
- Cancel your indicator if necessary.
- Build speed progressively.
Moving away should always be smooth, controlled and safe—not rushed.
Stopping Safely
Stopping correctly is just as important as moving away.
Your instructor will teach you how to stop in a safe, legal and convenient place without causing inconvenience to other road users.
Before stopping you’ll:
- Check your mirrors.
- Signal if it benefits other road users.
- Brake gently.
- Clutch down (manual) just before the car stops.
- Secure the vehicle with the handbrake.
- Select neutral if appropriate.
The goal is to make every stop smooth and comfortable for everyone in the vehicle.
Introducing MSPSL
As your lessons progress, you’ll begin using one of the most important driving routines you’ll ever learn:
MSPSL
This stands for:
- Mirrors
- Signal
- Position
- Speed
- Look
You’ll use MSPSL whenever approaching:
- Junctions
- Roundabouts
- Bends
- Parked vehicles
- Turning left or right
- Lane changes
- Hazards
Using this routine helps you plan ahead and deal with situations safely.
Mirrors
Your mirrors tell you what’s happening behind you.
Before changing speed or direction, check:
- Interior mirror
- Appropriate door mirror
This keeps you aware of traffic following you.
Signal
Only signal if it will benefit another road user.
Good signalling is:
- Timely
- Clear
- Accurate
Remember, signalling doesn’t give you priority—it simply tells others what you intend to do.
Position
Position your car correctly for the road ahead.
Examples include:
- Keeping left when turning left.
- Positioning towards the centre when turning right.
- Maintaining a safe distance from parked cars.
Good positioning makes your intentions clear to others.
Speed
Adjust your speed early.
Rather than braking heavily at the last moment, good drivers slow down gradually and select the correct gear where appropriate.
This gives you more time to react and keeps your driving smooth.
Look
Finally, look carefully before making your decision.
This means:
- Looking well ahead.
- Checking for pedestrians.
- Watching for cyclists.
- Assessing traffic from all directions.
Good observation helps you make safe decisions every time.
Why These Routines Matter
Many learner drivers think passing the test is about memorising manoeuvres. In reality, the driving test is all about making safe decisions.
By consistently using POM and MSPSL, you’ll:
- Develop safe driving habits from your very first lesson.
- Improve your confidence.
- Reduce stress behind the wheel.
- Show the examiner you’re planning ahead.
- Become a smoother, safer driver.
The more you practise these routines, the more natural they become.
