The POM Routine for moving off from the side of the road is used by many Approved Driving Instructors in the industry to help learners remember the things they are supposed to do when pulling away, the acronym POM means,

P – Prepare

This is where you get the car ready to move:

  • Clutch down (fully pressed)
  • Select first gear
  • Set the gas (press the accelerator slightly—about the thickness of a £1 coin)
  • Find the biting point (slowly raise the clutch until you feel the car slightly tug forward)
  • Check handbrake is on until you’re ready to move

👀 O – Observe

Before moving, you must check all around for safety:

  • Mirrors – Check rear-view and side mirrors
  • Blind spots – Look over both shoulders
  • Signal – Use indicators if necessary
  • Always Assess – Make sure it’s safe to go (watch for pedestrians, cyclists, other vehicles)

M – Move

Once it’s safe:

  • Release the handbrake
  • Gently raise the clutch while maintaining gas/accelerator
  • Smoothly accelerate and steer as needed

This routine helps build safe and confident driving habits, especially when pulling away from a stationary position.
